Research Focus

My general field of interest going into this project was looking into how teachers in two places - Norway and Ontario, Canada - teach global issues in the classroom. After discussions with my supervisor, I decided it would be more relevant to narrow my focus down to how teachers are responding to the war in Ukraine. I became interested in how teachers respond to student questions, how they are remaining sensitive to student needs during this time, and also how students are responding to the crisis, where their interests lie and where they are getting their information.

My research process was to first review the curriculum documents for both Norway and Ontario (I chose the Ontario curriculum as this is what I am most familiar with). I searched the social studies curricula for guidelines on how to teach students about global issues, both past and present. I then interviewed teachers from Norway and Ontario to find answers to some of my questions. Finally, I compiled my thoughts and reflections on my research and included them on this website.
